ScoreSunrise.com

All three areas we cover face roughly east over open water, so the sun comes up with nothing in the way. What changes from spot to spot is the foreground, the crowd, and how easy it is to find in the dark. Check the live score for your area first, then pick where to stand.

Eastern Suburbs

Bondi to Maroubra

Coogee Beach

A curved bay between two rocky headlands, with Wedding Cake Island sitting offshore to break up the horizon. The southern end near the rock pools gives you ledges and tide pools for a foreground. If low cloud is sitting on the water, walk up onto the grassy headland for a higher angle. It's east-facing and fairly sheltered, so it's a safe bet on a windier morning.

๐Ÿงญ Aspect: due east, island on the horizon
๐Ÿ“ -33.9189, 151.2589
๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Street parking on Coogee Bay Road & Arden Street
๐Ÿ“… Best Octโ€“Mar, when the sun rises earliest

Bondi Beach (North End)

The famous one, and a decent sunrise spot if you head to the north end below Ben Buckler. The headland there gives you a rocky point to build a shot around while the rest of the beach opens to clear ocean. The Bondi-to-Bronte coastal walk starts here too, so you can keep moving south as the light builds. Don't expect it to yourself โ€” Bondi's busy even at dawn.

๐Ÿงญ Aspect: east-southeast, headland to the north
๐Ÿ“ -33.8915, 151.2767
๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Campbell Parade & Notts Avenue (metered)
๐Ÿ“… Best Sepโ€“Apr

Tamarama Beach

A small, steep-sided bay between Bondi and Bronte. The cliffs on either side frame the rising sun and keep the crowd thinner than its neighbours. Downside is room โ€” it's a narrow beach, so on a high-scoring morning get there early if you want a clear foreground.

๐Ÿงญ Aspect: east, framed by cliffs both sides
๐Ÿ“ -33.8985, 151.2723
๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Limited street parking on Pacific Avenue
๐Ÿ“… Best Octโ€“Feb

Bronte Beach

The old ocean baths are the reason to come. On a still morning the pool goes glassy and mirrors the whole sky back at you. The cliffs and the park behind the sand give you higher angles if you want them. Swimmers turn up early, so there are usually people in the baths โ€” handy if you want them in shot, worth beating if you don't.

๐Ÿงญ Aspect: east, ocean pool for reflections
๐Ÿ“ -33.9055, 151.2691
๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Bronte Road (free before 8am)
๐Ÿ“… Best Novโ€“Feb

Maroubra Beach

A long, wide surf beach that's much quieter at dawn than the beaches up north. Plenty of open sand and steady swell, so you get a clean horizon with surfers as silhouettes and room to spread out even on a good morning. For some foreground texture, head to the rock platforms at the south end near Mahon Pool.

๐Ÿงญ Aspect: east, wide open horizon
๐Ÿ“ -33.9503, 151.2590
๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Marine Parade & Marine Drive (free)
๐Ÿ“… Best Octโ€“Mar

Northern Beaches

Manly to Palm Beach

Manly Beach

The southern anchor of the Northern Beaches and the easiest to reach โ€” a ferry from Circular Quay drops you a short walk from the sand. It's a long, straight, east-facing surf beach backed by a Norfolk-pine promenade, so there's plenty of room and a clean horizon. Quieter at the Queenscliff end to the north.

๐Ÿงญ Aspect: east, long open beach
๐Ÿ“ -33.7969, 151.2876
๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Paid parking around the town centre; ferry from the city
๐Ÿ“… Best Octโ€“Mar

Long Reef (Dee Why)

A wide headland and rock platform between Dee Why and Collaroy, and a long-time favourite with photographers. At low tide the flat rock shelf gives you reflective pools and texture for a foreground, with the ocean wrapping around to the east. Exposed, so it's better on a lighter-wind morning.

๐Ÿงญ Aspect: east, rock platform foreground
๐Ÿ“ -33.7437, 151.3206
๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Car park at Long Reef / Dee Why beachfront
๐Ÿ“… Best Octโ€“Mar; check the tide for the rock shelf

Palm Beach

The northern tip of the run, below the Barrenjoey headland and its lighthouse. The ocean side is a wide, east-facing surf beach with a big open horizon; the walk up to the lighthouse is worth it for an elevated angle once the light is up. Further from the city, so it stays calmer at dawn.

๐Ÿงญ Aspect: east, Barrenjoey headland to the north
๐Ÿ“ -33.5994, 151.3232
๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Parking at Governor Phillip Park & along Ocean Road
๐Ÿ“… Best Octโ€“Mar

Cronulla & the South

Bate Bay

North Cronulla Beach

The main stretch of Bate Bay, and the easiest spot in the south to reach โ€” Cronulla is the end of the train line, so you can get here from the city without a car. It's a long, east-facing surf beach with a promenade behind it and rock pools further along toward Cronulla Point.

๐Ÿงญ Aspect: east over Bate Bay
๐Ÿ“ -34.0490, 151.1557
๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Street parking along The Esplanade; train to Cronulla
๐Ÿ“… Best Octโ€“Mar

Wanda Beach

The northern end of Bate Bay, backed by sand dunes and much quieter than Cronulla proper. Wide and exposed with a clean open horizon, it's a good pick if you want space and few people in the frame. The dunes give you a higher vantage point if you want to shoot down the beach.

๐Ÿงญ Aspect: east, dunes behind
๐Ÿ“ -34.0392, 151.1631
๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Car park at the Wanda surf club end
๐Ÿ“… Best Octโ€“Mar

Cronulla Point & Rock Pools

South of the main beach the coast turns to sandstone shelves and ocean pools around Cronulla Point and Shelly Beach. The pools and ledges make strong low foregrounds, and the point gives you the open sea to the east. Best on a calm, low-tide morning when the water's still.

๐Ÿงญ Aspect: east, rock ledges & pools
๐Ÿ“ -34.0571, 151.1561
๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Street parking around the Esplanade & Gerrale Street
๐Ÿ“… Best Octโ€“Mar; calm, low tide ideal

Timing

Get there 25โ€“30 minutes early. The deep pinks and purples usually peak in the twilight before the sun actually breaks the horizon. Show up at the listed sunrise time and you've often missed the best bit.

Check the score the night before. Over 70, worth the alarm. Under 40, sleep in. It updates every 60 minutes, so glance at it again when you wake.

The sun moves along the horizon through the year โ€” a bit south of due east in summer, a bit north of it in winter โ€” so the exact direction shifts with the season.

Why the East Coast Works

These beaches face straight out into the Tasman, with no land between you and the horizon. The first light comes in low and travels a long way through the air, which is what lights up mid and high cloud. Add Sydney's habit of clearing nicely the morning after a front โ€” rising pressure, scattered cloud, dry westerly wind โ€” and you get a lot of good sunrises along this stretch.
